PreFirst Grade Curriculum

LANGUAGE ARTS

The PLEASANT ROWLAND READING PROGRAM, Adventures of the Superkids, is based upon strong pedagogical research and proven classroom teaching practices. Word structure, spelling, handwriting, speaking and listening, and a comprehensive language program form the foundation for the phonics curriculum. The proper techniques, along with continuous practice decoding words, enable students to become confident, self-reliant readers. Comprehension development begins immediately as children are taught parts of speech, contractions, adding endings to root words, plurals, correct word usage and punctuation. Classroom readers and skills books are utilized to encourage oral expressive reading and creative writing relating to selected themes. The take-home skills books allow parents to monitor their child’s progress. In addition, the classroom is equipped with a library for students to check out books each day covering a variety of topics and interests.

SADLIER-OXFORD PROGRESS IN MATHEMATICS is a complete basal mathematics program. The curriculum allows the flexibility to group students according to their mathematical knowledge. Topics include: position, classification, comparison, number recognition to twenty, addition, subtraction, place value, time money, geometry, measurement, fractions, and graphing. Special attention is given to the development of critical thinking and problem solving skills.

The Zaner-Blaser Handwriting program guides students through an easy step-by-step process for learning neat and legible handwriting of letters and numbers. The program builds a solid foundation to support reading and writing.

MATHEMATICS

The Harcourt Mathematics curriculum presents a balanced approach to learning math concepts. This series emphasizes basic computational skills and problem solving. Activity-based instruction and manipulatives are used to explore mathematical concepts such as, commutative property, patterning, charts and graphs, word problems, number sense, geometry, fractions, time, money, measurement, weight, capacity, number recognition, and addition and subtraction. This comprehensive program teaches children the strategies and skills necessary to build confidence and develop a strong, lasting understanding of math.

SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES

The Harcourt Science program provides resources to promote scientific literacy in children. In Life Science, students learn about plants and animals, their environments, and habitats. The Life Science Unit teaches children to distinguish between living and non-living organisms while recognizing that different plants and animal inhabit different kinds of environments. Earth Science explores the weather and seasons, rocks and fossils, and natural resources. Children learn to identify how land, air, and water are used and attempt to recognize patterns of weather and seasons. The Physical Science Unit focuses on matter, energy, forces, and magnets. Children are encouraged to gather information and make simple decisions to extend the senses. Simple experiments and manipulatives enhance the total learning experience.

The Scott-Foresman Social Studies curriculum teaches students to recognize important links between themselves and their families, community, state, nation, and world. The student develops an appreciation for historic, geographic, and economic factors that have shaped our world. Historical figures are brought to life as children discover the connection between their past and future. Teaching students to recognize national symbols encourages a sense of pride in their community. Geographical studies, such as basic map and globe skills, enhance critical thinking skills as children begin to understand the world around them and the need for exploration. Students develop cultural awareness and learn the importance of rules and laws. Students are given specific suggestions for assuming a responsible role in their community. The classroom experience reinforces the need for respect, fairness, honesty, and courage.
